West Coast coach Adam Simpson has urged his players not to give up on their premiership hopes, saying the season is well and truly alive despite the teams patchy form. The Eagles top-four hopes are hanging by a thread following last weeks upset loss to Collingwood, which saw them slip to sixth on the ladder.West Coast will start as hot favourites against Fremantle in Sundays western derby at Domain Stadium. But they face a brutal run home after that, with games against premiership hopefuls GWS (away), Hawthorn (home), and Adelaide (away) to round out the season. It means West Coast face an uphill battle just to lock away a home final, let alone push for premiership glory. But Simpson is a glass-half-full type of coach, and he knows the return of star ruckman Nic Naitanui has the potential to dramatically help the teams cause.Weve still got plenty of optimism for the season, said Simpson, who led West Coast to the grand final last year.Where were at on the ladder is not to the point where were giving up, and that needs to be known throughout our players. The season is very much alive. Weve got to be very clear about that.Naitanui has been sorely missed since undergoing surgery to relieve Achilles tendon soreness in June. The 2012 All-Australian has lost 3kg and strengthened his calves during his injury lay-off, with the Eagles claiming Naitanuis trademark big leap has gotten even bigger. If Naitanui comes back firing, West Coasts flagging premiership hopes could be turned around in an instant. But Simpson said it was also important for the clubs second-tier players to start pulling their weight. Our role players are really important for our club, and at the moment theyre not holding up their end of the bargain, Simpson said. The Dockers sit in 16th spot on the ladder following a horror season in which theyve only won three games.Injuries to key players, plus an inability to adapt to a new attacking game plan, have been the major reasons behind the teams slide.Fremantles plight was evident to see last week when they copped a 90-point hammering from Sydney in Matthew Pavlichs 350-game milestone. The disappointment on Pavlichs face was clear to see as he was being cheered from the field after the game. But Dockers coach Ross Lyon said the focus of this week had been on the team performance, rather than the milestone letdown. Were not a club that just wants to go down eulogising individuals, Lyon said.As important as they are, were all passing through.Ill pass through. Matthew (will). Luke McPharlins gone. (Nat) Fyfe will go at some point. Its about achieving team success. So as important as that was for Matthew, Matthew would say the same thing - it was about the team performance, and we ultimately didnt get the four points and play the way we wanted to.The Dockers will be boosted by the return of ruckman Aaron Sandilands (broken ribs) and goalsneak Hayden Ballantyne (fractured cheekbone), while Naitanui and Elliot Yeo are among the ins for West Coast. . For the Wild it was their first win of the season and they now have a record of 1-1-2 while the Jets fall to 2-2. Jets start a six game home stand Friday with another divisional game, home to the Dallas Stars. . - Blake Griffin had 30 points and 12 rebounds, J. . Belfort (24-10) needed just 77 seconds to down Henderson in the headlining bout of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson" event at Goiania Arena in Goiania, Brazil. The fight served as a rematch of the pairs 2006 meeting, which Henderson won by decision. . The parade and rally were held to celebrate the Saskatchewan Roughriders 45-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Sunday in the CFLs championship game. . PETERSBURG, Fla. The NCAA announced Monday that it would remove seven championship events from North Carolina because of HB2, the controversial law that requires people to use the public restroom that matches the sex indicated on a persons birth certificate.Fairness is about more than the opportunity to participate in college sports, or even compete for championships, NCAA president Mark Emmert said in a statement. We believe in providing a safe and respectful environment at our events and are committed to providing the best experience possible for college athletes, fans and everyone taking part in our championships. Its great that the NCAA is making a statement about how much it values inclusion not just in sport, but in society. But the question is: what does this mean for NCAA member institutions that openly discriminate against LGBTQ students on their campuses? Its absolutely fair for the NCAA to single out North Carolina; the states law is blatantly discriminatory, and the statements made by Gov. Pat McCrory after its passage (and by the North Carolina GOP following the NCAAs announcement) underscore that fact. The law is a direct attack on gay people and trans people specifically, those most vulnerable to violence and vitriol within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community. But the NCAA perpetuates LGBTQ discrimination in other areas of its governance. For example, a number of the NCAA member schools have applied for and been granted Title IX exemptions -- typically religious exemptions related to the usage of campus facilities, according to the?Human Rights Campaign. In other words, religious schools are requesting (and being allowed) the right to restrict access to bathrooms, housing and sports based on gender identity. If that sounds a lot like whats happening in North Carolina, thats because it is.To be fair, the NCAA does a lot through its Office of Inclusion to address LGGBTQ equality.dddddddddddd It has a policy protecting the abilities of trans people to play at the college level, and it provides materials about how to run LGBTQ-inclusive sports programs. It has hosted webinars on intra-team dating and summits on LGBTQ identity and faith, and every year the Office of Inclusion hosts its own conference. Its not like they do nothing.Whats frustrating is that the NCAA seems to want to have its cake and eat it too. The organization will move events, inform and educate, but when it comes to holding membership institutions accountable for their own discrimination, it falls short. When asked for comment, the NCAA referred to its original statement, in which board of governors vice chairman Jay Lemons said, Our membership comprises many different types of schools -- public, private, secular, faith-based -- and we believe this action appropriately reflects the collective will of that diverse group. In July, the NBA decided to move its All-Star Game out of Charlotte because of North Carolinas law, and earlier this year, the NFL drew criticism for not moving the 2017 Super Bowl from Houston after local voters repealed an LGBTQ-inclusive human rights ordinance. Frankly, the logistics of where leagues are playing or not playing their games are getting tiring. The NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and NCAA could affect sustainable, tangible change all the way down to youth playing sports if they committed to doing so. The major sports leagues have a long way to go before theyre able to earn anything more than a golf clap of acknowledgement.Nevertheless, this step is unprecedented for the NCAA in its recognition of LGBTQ rights. It should be applauded for it. This thinking also should filter down to college and university campuses.Only time will tell. ' ' '
